Dear YHS Families,
We have almost finished our first month of distance learning, and on behalf of the faculty at Yarmouth High School, we’d like to thank you for your patience as we all adjust to the changes at home, at work, and at school. It is inspiring to see students and teachers take such creative approaches to staying connected through advisory, as well as planning for “virtual” events such as the Yarmouth Arts and Writing Project Open Mic night later this week. As we start the 4th quarter, there are many questions regarding the end of the school year, and we would like to provide you with as many updates as possible.
Spring Celebrations - There are several important events for students and their families in May and June. Although it is still too early to make any decisions, the administrative team is already considering how these events might take place given current social distancing requirements and school building closures. For our seniors, our faculty is committed to finding a way to celebrate these end-of-year events including the Boyd Award and graduation ceremonies.
College Info Night - As we continue adjusting to the realities of life in the land of social distancing, the YHS guidance department has been working with college admissions counselors to find new ways to connect you to all the amazing college campuses and their offerings. Although we will not be able to host our annual spring College Info Night, there are opportunities to embrace some of the creative ways colleges are bringing their campuses to you. Below are the many types of College Admissions events you'll find on their individual websites:
*Colleges are hosting live question and answer sessions
*Students can join colleges for Online Information Sessions to learn about academics, student life, and the admission process.
*Students can "video chat" with current students
*Students can attend a virtual tour with "student tour guides"
*Families can attend "Live Admissions and Financial Aid Q & A sessions" by registering online
*Families can connect with an Admissions Counselor by video chat, text exchange or phone calls
Additionally, please enjoy this special message by Nik Ray, Senior Associate Director of Recruitment from the University of Maine at Orono. Remember to visit the Individual College Websites as ways to connect and learn about the individual schools and as always...reach out to Mrs. Doane or Mrs. Michaelsen with any questions about the college search and admissions process!
AP Exams - Attached is the revised AP Exam Schedule which also explains the different format for this year’s exams. All students received this information on April 3rd from the College Board, and additional information will be sent from guidance on the online process students will use this May for exams.
4th Quarter Grading Proposal - Earlier today, Dr. Dolloff sent a districtwide note regarding several proposals that will be discussed at the school committee this Thursday, April 9th related to distance learning. As we look ahead to the rest of the school year, we believe that a “credit/no-credit” grading system will better meet the needs of our students during the 4th quarter. Please see this link for more information which provides a more detailed explanation of the proposal, as well as a FAQ section to help answer questions. If you would like to attend Thursday’s meeting online, please go to the following link:
