Many of you have reached out to ask how you might help support the new Mainers who arrived in our community from Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Haiti late last week. We are working feverishly to determine their needs and to enroll their children in school, and we anticipate welcoming them into our schools early next week.
In the short term, there is an urgent need for clothing. These new residents arrived with very few belongings, and they are in need of warmer pants, jackets, and sweaters – along with clothing that will be appropriate as we head into the spring and summer. We are working with Yarmouth Community Services (YCS) to coordinate this effort, and we ask that you access this site created by YCS to sign up to make specific donations.
After signing up, please drop “gently worn” items at the former Community Services building, located in the parking lot behind Town Hall, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (except holidays).
The YCS site also provides opportunities for you to sign up to volunteer or to make a financial donation through Yarmouth Cares About Neighbors (YCAN).
Thank you for responding to these needs; we have enjoyed meeting these families, and we look forward to helping them get settled in their new community.
