Bird in a student hand

Nicole Colfer, STEAM Teacher at Yarmouth Elementary School, has been running a BirdSafe curriculum for two years. Earlier this year, her students wrote letters asking school leaders to take action to eliminate birds dying by flying into the school's windows. Their efforts culminated in a bank of bird-safe curtains being installed on the back side of the school in early 2024.

Since the installation, no birds have crashed into the windows of the school. For their efforts, YES has been named as one of two educational institutions (along with the University of New England) to receive an inaugural BirdSafe Maine Award of Recognition from Maine Audubon Society.
